Escape the city to the East End

While summer is coming to an end, there is still good weather to escape to the East End of Long Island. Because of the pandemic, many of my trips were cancelled, and I imagine the same thing happened to you. However, now that the numbers have improved in NYC, we can finally leave the city and escape for a few days to any destination.

Si bien el verano está llegando a su final, aún hay buen clima para escaparse al East End de Long Island. Debido a la pandemia muchos de mis viajes fueron cancelados, y me imagino que a ti te pasó lo mismo. Sin embargo, ahora que las cifras han mejorado en NYC, podemos finalmente salir de la ciudad y escaparnos por unos días a cualquier destino.

Long Island is a place that has been preparing a lot in terms of tourism during the pandemic. In one of my last master’s classes, we had the Marketing Director as a guest and she told us about the strong promotion they were doing to lure New Yorkers to the island.  Its open spaces, various outdoor activities, and culinary and entertainment options make it a perfect alternative for those looking to escape the confinement in NYC.

Long Island es un lugar que se ha venido preparando mucho en cuanto a turismo durante la pandemia. Es más, en una de mis últimas clases de la maestría, tuvimos como invitada a la directora de Marketing y nos contó de la fuerte promoción que estaban haciendo para atraer a los New Yorkinos hacia la isla. Sus espacios abiertos, diversas actividades en las afueras, y propuestas culinarias y de entretenimiento la hacen una perfecta alternativa para aquellos que buscan escapar del confinamiento en NYC.

We chose to stay two days in the Hamptons, specifically in East Hampton. This.  village is about 2 and a half hours from Manhattan by car, but you can also travel by train via Long Island Railroad departing from Penn Station (34th st.) and connect in Jamaica station, Queens  where you will embark on a journey of 2  to 3 hours by train, depends on which village you go to.

Nosotros optamos por quedarnos dos días en los Hamptons, específicamente en East Hampton. Este. pueblo queda aproximadamente a 2 horas y media desde Manhattan en auto, pero también puedes viajar en tren vía Long Island Railroad que sale desde Penn Station (34th st.) y conecta en Jamaica station, Queens donde te embarcaras en una travesía de 2 a 3 horas en tren, depende a que pueblo vayas.

Airbnb has thousands of housing options in the Hamptons, we saw some alternatives in Southampton but our interest was spending the day in Montauk, so we chose East Hampton because it’s only 20 minutes away. Housing options vary in size, cost, and location. Since we were the two of us alone, we rented a studio in a house. For larger groups there are entire houses with swimming pools and other amenities that you can find between 800 to 2, 000+ a night.  

Airbnb tiene miles de opciones de hospedaje en los Hamptons, vimos unas alternativas en South Hampton pero nuestro interés era pasar el día en Montauk, así que elegimos East Hampton porque está a tan sólo 20 minutos. Las opciones de hospedaje varían en tamaño, costo y locación. Como éramos los 2 solos rentamos un studio en una casa. Para grupos más grandes hay casas enteras con piscina que puedes encontrar entre 800 a 2 mil + la noche.

Our studio was perfect, I loved it because it was super zen and had special touches of spirituality.  I really liked the decoration, lighting, space and amenities, all this made us feel like in a boutique hotel. Our initial intention was to stay in Montauk but there were no hotels that accepted short stays on weekends (minimum 3 nights), so this house was perfect for our plans.

Nuestro estudio era perfecto, me encantó porque era super zen y tenían toques especiales de espiritualidad. Además, que las buenas vibras que emitía, me gustó mucho la decoración, iluminación, espacio y detalles, todo ello hizo que nos sintamos como en un hotel boutique. Nuestra intención inicial era hospedarnos en Montauk pero no habían hoteles que acepten cortas estadías los fines de semana (mínimo 3 noches), así que esta casa fue perfecta para nuestros planes.

Personally, I love the beach and prefer to spend the day in places where I will have the sea in front of me, in a more chill and laid back atmosphere, where there are places where I can hang out that are relaxed options and also trendy. That’s why for our short trip we decided to spend our time mostly in Montauk.

Personalmente, amo la playa y prefiero pasar el día en lugares donde tendré al mar frente a mí, en un ambiente más chill y laidback, donde haya desde opciones relajadas como otras también trendy. Es por eso que para nuestro corto viaje decidimos pasar nuestro tiempo mayormente en Montauk. 

Montauk is known for being the last village on the east side of Long Island. This town reminds me a lot of Punta Hermosa in Lima. It has restaurants of all kinds, lodgings from motels to resorts, (here it is more difficult to find Airbnbs). The vibe is much more relaxed than the Hamptons, it’s a surfer village where you eat good food, and you have a great time because you have so many entertainment options. 

Montauk es conocido por ser el último pueblo del lado Este de Long Island. Este pueblo me recuerda mucho a Punta Hermosa en Lima. Tiene restaurantes de todo tipo, hospedajes desde moteles hasta resorts, (aquí es más difícil encontrar Airbnbs). La vibra es mucho más relajada que la de los Hamptons, es un pueblo surfer donde se come delicioso, y se pasa super bien porque tiene muchas opciones de entretenimiento.

Escape to the beach: there are public beaches, as well as private beaches in Montauk and the Hamptons, so I recommend doing your research  before. The parking is a bit tedious because you have to have permission to park the car and for this you need to be a resident of the village. Luckily, on the Main street near the shops we were able to park without problem and walk a few blocks towards the public beach. The beach was clean, people were doing social distancing, and the sea was nice but with big waves because a storm was coming. However, we had a great time listening to music, munching on food and drinking some sparkling drinks.

Escápate a la playa: hay playas públicas, como también privadas en Montauk y los Hamptons, asi que te recomiendo hacer tu research antes. El tema del parqueo es un poco tedioso porque hay que tener permiso para parquear el auto y para ello requieres ser residente del pueblo. Por suerte, en el Main street cerca de las tiendas pudimos parquear sin problema y caminar unos bloques hacia la playa publica en Montauk. La playa estaba limpia, la gente hacia distanciamiento social debido y el mar estaba movido porque venía una tormenta. Sin embargo, la pasamos super bien, escuchando música, picando algo de comer y tomando unos espumantes.

Leaving the beach, we recommend a stop at Montauk’s famous ice cream spot, Ralph’s Italian Ices &. Ice Cream. My husband loved it. Also a few meters away, there is a bar popular among locals called Sloppy Tuna, you can go for a few drinks and have a bite to  eat.

Saliendo de la playa recomendamos un stop en el lugar de helados famoso de Montauk, Ralph’s Italian Ices &. Ice Cream. ¡A mi esposo le encantaron!. También a unos metros, hay un bar super conocido por los locales llamado Sloopy Tuna, puedes ir a tomar unos tragos y comer algo.

We decided to return to East Hampton, but with a well-deserved stop at LUNCH. A popular place for its seafood offering, located on the road leaving Montauk. You have the option to eat outdoors or get food and drinks to go. We asked our food to go, and I must admit the lobster was spectacular.

Nosotros decidimos regresar a East Hampton, pero con una merecida parada en LUNCH. Un lugar popular por la oferta marina, super fresca, ubicado en la carretera saliendo de Montauk. Tiene opción de comer en el patio o de comida y tragos para llevar. Nosotros pedimos para llevar, y debo admitir que la langosta estaba espectacular.

After relaxing in our studio, we got ready for our dinner and returned to Montauk. While East Hampton has several restaurants, including one of my favorites that is also  here in NYC, St.  Ambreus, for me the magic was to eat with the sea breeze and overlooking the ocean, so we returned to Montauk. 

Después de relajarnos en nuestro studio, nos alistamos para nuestra cena y volver a Montauk. Si bien East Hampton tiene varios restaurantes, entre ellos uno de mis favoritos que también esta aquí en NYC, San Ambreus, para mí la magia estaba de comer con la brisa marina asi que volvimos a Montauk.

Here are some options:

• Duryeas  Lobster Deck : doesn’t accept reservations, so  if you decide to go there will surely be a queue to enter. The place is one of the most popular in the area because the view of the bay is beautiful. The menu is based on wines and sea food, but also has meat and chicken options.
• Duryeas Lobster Deck: no aceptan reservas, así que si decides ir seguramente habrá una cola para entrar. El lugar es uno de los más populares del área porque la vista de la bahía es hermosa. El menú es basado en vinos y comida de mar, pero también tiene opciones de carnes y pollo.

• Navy Beach: you have to have reservation to enter, it was not this way but because of the pandemic it changed. Navy Beach a couple of times before and I love it. The food is good and varied, the atmosphere is beautiful, relaxed and chic at the same time, and finally the views for sunset are one of my favorites.
• Navy Beach: tienes que tener reserva para entrar, anteriormente no era asi pero ahora lo hacen por el aforo debido a la pandemia. Yo he ido a Navy Beach un par de veces antes y me encanta. La comida es buena y variada, la atmosfera es bonita, relajada y chic a la vez, y finalmente las vistas para sunset son bellas. De mis favoritos en Montauk.

• Surf Lodge: One of the “must go places”, everyone who comes to Montauk goes there, or at least tries to get in if doorman permits. People come here more than for the food, for the party. I have had super good times in this place in previous summers, but now because of Covid, it only allows guests of the hotel to enjoy the bar and restaurant. So, if you want to have a great time in this place, you have to book your stay.
• Surf Lodge: Uno de los sitios más populares, todos los que vienen a Montauk van ahí, mas que por la comida, por la fiesta. He pasado super buenos momentos en este lugar en veranos pasados, pero bueno ahora por Covid sólo permiten estar en el bar y restaurante a los huéspedes el hotel. Así que, si quieres pasarla rico en este lugar, tienes que reservar tu estadía.

• Gurney’s Montauk Resort and Seawater Spa: It is an icon of the area, one of the most luxurious and exclusive offers. Now they also opened another one that is on the bay side and it is called Star Island Resort & Marina. But the one that is the “staple” of Montauk/ Hamptons is this one. To get in the restaurant and bar is with reservation only, and I recommend doing it in advance. I’ve previously come to Gurney’s outdoor bar and loved it. It is the chicest resort in Montauk where you can easily run into a famous person. Because the bar is available for guests only, we made a reservation at Scarpetta Beach. Scarpetta took the concession of the restaurant and not only the space has a vibe of beach atmosphere with a trendy edge, but also the food, attention and drinks are excellent. It was the first time we ate inside a restaurant since the pandemic started, but they made us feel totally safe at all times, so we had a great time, especially when we really enjoyed our meals (lobster again!).
• Gurney’s Montauk Resort and Seawater Spa: Es un icono del area, una de las ofertas más lujosas y exclusivas. Ahora también abrieron otro que esta para la bahía y se llama Star Island Resort & Marina. Pero el que es el “staple” de Montauk/ Hamptons es este. Para entrar al restaurante y bar es con reserva y te recomiendo hacerla con anticipación. Anteriormente he venido al outdoor bar de Gurney’s y me encantó. Es el resort más chic de Montauk donde fácilmente puedes encontrarte a algún famoso. Debido a que el bar está disponible sólo para huéspedes, hicimos reserva en Scarpetta Beach. Scarpetta tomó la concesión del restaurante y no sólo el espacio tiene una vibra de ambiente playero con un edge trendy, sino también la comida, atención y tragos son excelentes. Fue la primera vez que comimos dentro de un restaurante desde que empezó la pandemia, pero nos hicieron sentir totalmente seguros en todo momento, asi que la pasamos super bien, sobre todo comimos delicioso (otra vez langosta).

For our dinner we decided not to drive because the road between East Hampton to Montauk, although it is 17 minutes, is dark and many deer appear. Luckily Uber already operates in the Hamptons, so the driver took us and picked us up without any problems.

Para nuestra cena decidimos no manejar porque el camino entre East Hampton a Montauk, si bien es de 17 minutos, es oscuro y aparecen muchos venados. Por suerte Uber ya opera en Los Hamptons y el chofer nos llevó y recogió sin problemas. 

For the next day, there was a storm that kind of ruined our plans to go to a vineyard. One of the most popular ones, which requires advance booking is Wolffer  Estate  Vineyard. Another more accessible option is Channing Daughters. So, if you are into wine, you can add any of these into your list.

Para el siguiente día, hubo una tormenta que malogró nuestros planes de ir a un viñedo. Uno de los más conocidos y que requieren reserva con anticipación es Wolffer Estate Vineyard. Otra opción más accesible es Channing Daughters.

Another thing I recommend to do in Montauk is to hike or bike to the Montauk Lighthouse, which although it is closed because of the pandemic, it is worth going to see it from the outside, as it’s a historic landmark.

Otra opción que recomiendo en Montauk es hacer hiking o montar bicicleta hacia el Montauk Lighthouse, que si bien esta cerrado por la pandemia, vale la pena aunque sea verlo desde afuera.

Lastly, one of our highlights was seeing these huge and beautiful houses as we drove, also the open fields, farms and collectible cars.

Algo que nos gustó mucho fue ver las casas, los campos abiertos, las granjas y los carros de colección en nuestro recorrido en los Hamptons.

Remember that the weather is still in our favor and you can still consider the East End of Long Island for your escape out of town. It is said that the summer service season will continue, as demand in the area has increased due to the pandemic. That said, we still have a potential trip destination close to NYC!!!

Recuerda que el clima aún está a nuestro favor y aún puedes considerar el East End de Long Island para tu escape fuera de la ciudad. Se dice que la temporada de servicio de verano se prolongará, dado que la demanda en el área ha aumentado debido a la pandemia. ¡¡¡Quiere decir, New Yorkers que tenemos opciones cercanas de viajes cortos aún disponibles para nosotros!!!
