In my continuous desire to explore what NYC has to offer, this past weekend I ventured offshore and visited an island located 8 minutes away by ferry from Manhattan. Governors island is a beautiful and unique landmark in New York, as it has so many things to offer within itself. This 172 acre island is open for passive recreation activities, from rollerblading, biking,soft hiking, to picnicking or eating at one of its restaurants
En mi continuo deseo de explorar lo que NYC tiene para ofrecer, este fin de semana pasado me aventuré a visitar una isla ubicada a 8 minutos en ferry desde Manhattan. Governors Island es un hermoso y único lugar en Nueva York, ya que tiene tantas cosas que ofrecer dentro de sí misma. Esta isla de 172 acres está abierta para actividades de recreación pasiva, desde patinaje, ciclismo, caminata, hasta picnic o comer en uno de sus restaurantes.
If you want to visit it, you must take a ferry from Manhattan at the Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street) or on the weekends from Brooklyn at Red Hook/Atlantic Basin ferry terminal. To get access to a ferry ticket, you must visit this website, tickets are 3 dollars from the city. Now with Covid-19, there’s a new reservation system, visitors now have to pick their time of departure from the city or Brooklyn and their time of departure from the island. While on the ferry, everyone must wear their masks and stay 6 feet away from each other. Based on my personal experience, the ferry was not too packed, everyone followed rules, we preferred to stay on the outside deck since the trip was so short.
Si desea visitarlo, debe tomar un ferry desde Manhattan en el Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street) o los fines de semana desde Brooklyn en la terminal de ferry Red Hook/Atlantic Basin. Para obtener acceso a un ticket de ferry, debes visitar este sitio web, las entradas están 3 dólares desde Manhattan. Ahora, con Covid-19, hay un nuevo sistema de reservas, los visitantes ahora tienen que elegir su hora de salida de la ciudad o Brooklyn y su hora de salida de la isla. Mientras están en el ferry, todos deben usar sus máscaras y mantenerse a 6 pies de distancia el uno del otro. Once we arrived at the island we noticed there were many things to do. We brought our own food, drinks and blanket for our picnic. We decided to do it on the west side of the island, as there were not many people in that area. The views were breathtaking and the weather was just perfect! After the picnic we explored the island more, we noticed there were rental bikes, even those bikes that you can ride in groups (fun!). Also people bring their rollerblades and their own bikes to explore at leisure. Visitors were also hiking to the top of a hill that definitely had mesmerizing views of Lady Liberty.
Una vez que llegamos a la isla nos dimos cuenta de que había muchas cosas que hacer. Trajimos nuestra propia comida, bebidas y manta para nuestro picnic. Decidimos hacerlo en el lado oeste de la isla, ya que no había mucha gente en esa zona. Las vistas eran impresionantes y el clima era simplemente perfecto! Después del picnic exploramos más la isla, nos dimos cuenta de que había bicicletas de alquiler, incluso aquellas bicicletas que se pueden montar en grupos (¡divertido!). También la gente trae sus patines y sus propias bicicletas para explorar a sus anchas Los visitantes también estaban caminando hasta la cima de una colina que definitivamente tenía vistas fascinantes de la Estatua de la Libertad.
For those who prefer to not carry things, I saw many restaurants open with a variety of food and drink options (see full list here). Another gem that I encountered and which I was so proud to visit was Collective Retreats. My two good friends from my Tourism Management Masters program at NYU are currently working there. I was able to visit the grounds and I was captivated by the vibe and atmosphere. Collective Retreats offers the true definition of GLAMPING. Beautiful air-conditioned tents with different themes, gourmet dining at their terrace bar and restaurant (also open for non-guests), sunset s’mores at the campfire, mindfulness sessions of yoga and meditation, complimentary water taxi service and of course the amazing views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan.
Para aquellos que prefieren no llevar cosas, vi muchos restaurantes abiertos con una variedad de opciones de comida y bebida (ver lista completa aquí). Otra joya que encontré y que estaba tan orgullosa de visitar fue Collective Retreats. Mis dos buenos amigos de la Maestría en Gestión Turística que llevé en la Universidad de Nueva York están trabajando allí. Pude visitar los jardines y me cautivó el ambiente y la atmosfera. Collective Retreats ofrece la verdadera definición de GLAMPING, camping de lujo. Hermosas carpas con aire acondicionado y con diferentes temáticas, comida gourmet en su bar y restaurante en la terraza (también abierto para no invitados), malvaviscos de puesta de sol en la fogata, sesiones de yoga y meditación, servicio de taxi acuático gratuito y, por supuesto, las increíbles vistas de la Estatua de la Libertad y Manhattan.
This gorgeous island is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm and Saturday to Sunday from 10am to 7pm. This landmark has an award-winning park, several historic buildings, environmental educational facilities. Esta hermosa isla está abierta de lunes a viernes de 10am a 6pm y de sábado a domingo de 10am a 7pm. Cuenta con un parque galardonado, varios edificios históricos, instalaciones educativas ambientales.
