Food Wednesday: A Venezuelan delicacy

I’m not only a fan of Peruvian food. I just happen to love food in general. It could be American, Latin, Italian, Japanese, etc. Today let’s talk about a Venezuelan delicacy I discovered not too long ago.

Last summer, I ventured myself to visit my beloved Washington Heights, well known for the predominance of Dominicans. I went to dance the night away with a group of friends and when the night was over we decided to get something to eat from the “Chimi truck”. One of my friends mentioned that he knew a great food truck that was just a couple of blocks away. He convinced us by saying “These amazing sandwiches have fried plantains instead of bread”. That was it for me, I had to try this deliciousness.

We arrived and we were mesmerized by the popularity of this little food truck in the corner. Cars and people making lines to grab a bite from there. The friend who took us there decided to order for all of us, since we didn’t know what to order. He brought to the car ‘Palitos’ and ‘Patacones’. After trying both, I was amazed! It was incredibly good! The first one was fried cheese wrapped in a crispy dough. The second one, was effectively a chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato, mayo, ketchup, on a two big pieces of fried plantain bun. After the first bite, I couldn’t’ stop eating until it was all gone.

The name of this food truck was PATACON PISAO. I mistakenly thought it was Dominican, it is actually Venezuelan. I was sad because chances I go back to this spot were rare, since it was so far away from my house. However, like any foodie would do, I did my research on it and found out that they have a little restaurant in Queens.

My boyfriend and I decided to visit this spot and we were so happy when we learned it was from the same owners of the food truck in Uptown Manhattan. Here, I learned that what my friend was calling “palitos” were actually “Tequenos” and that they had “Patacones” with chicken, beef, and ham and cheese. They also have other choices like cachapas, arepas, etc.

I totally recommend visiting either the food truck or the restaurant, they are both excellent. Just be aware that it could be addictive, especially if you live close to one of them 😛
